Capita launches into Orbit with Coláiste Feirste students
Capita IT and Networks is delighted to sponsor students from Coláiste Feirste, Belfast, who are participating in The FIRST®LEGO® League competition - the ultimate science and technology challenge for schools. The FIRST® LEGO®League competition is a global science and technology challenge that encourages student interest in real-world issues and develops key skills to help students think like scientists and engineers. Operated in the UK and Ireland by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), more than 250,000 young people aged 9-16 years old from 80 countries participate each year.
A different challenge is released annually, and the 2018 FIRST®LEGO®League challenge will launch into Orbit, with a space themed and transport teams to space. With the 2018/2019 FIRST® LEGO® League season, students will explore, challenge, and innovate in the vast expanse of space.
The team of year 9 students from Coláiste Feirste have been challenged in building, testing and programming a robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® technology and to solve a range of missions in the robot game. The students will choose and solve a real-world issue using the technology and will support the development of teamwork, research and problem-solving skills.
Caoimhín Mac Colaim teacher Coláiste Feirste, said “The FIRST®LEGO®League competition is a fantastic way for our students to display their knowledge and skills of robotics. It’s great to see their development from identifying the challenge to producing a resolution. The students are very eager to be involved, working during lunch time and after school hours. It’s a pleasure for the school and each student to be supported by the team from Capita.”
Gerald McCusker, a STEM ambassador from Capita, has been appointed to support the team of students from Coláiste Feirste, guiding them throughout their challenge. As a mentor, he will be on-hand to answer any support questions and visit the school regularly, joining team meetings in addition to set-up on the final tournament day.
Gerald says: “I am delighted to be a mentor in the FIRST®LEGO®League for a second year. It’s very inspiring to witness at first-hand the pupils overcoming their challenge and developing skills each week. Being part of an experience that clearly shows how young people work as a team, research their challenges and solve them, highlights the level of skills students in NI schools have. I look forward to working with the team of students from Coláiste Feirste and wish them all the best with their challenge, which I’m confident they will exceed in.”
The 2018 tournament was launched by W5 in September 2018 and the Northern Ireland regional tournament will take place in the science and discovery centre on Wednesday 5th December. Winners from the Northern Ireland tournament will attend the UK-wide final, competing for the chance to qualify for the global round of the competition.
